1.What Is Cor-Ten Steel?
Cor-Ten steel (also known as Weathering steel) was originally developed to eliminate the need to paint the steel. In 1933, National Steel Corporation developed and patented this mechanically strong steel, primarily for use in the construction of railroad hopper cars. Due to its extraordinary properties, weathering steel is widely used today.
2.How is Cor-Ten steel different from regular carbon steel?
Cor-Ten steel develops a protective layer on its surface to withstand the effects of weather. The protective layer is formed thanks to the special composition of Cor-Ten steel - among other elements, Cor-Ten steel contains small amounts of copper, nickel and chromium. Due to environmental influences, the layer that protects the surface continuously develops and recovers. In other words: Let the steel rust in order to form a protective layer. Oxidation of the steel surface can take up to six months.
